Jackson Rathbone and Erika Christensen to Star in THE IDIOT Adaptation

Jackson Rathbone and Erika Christensen have signed on to star in the feature adaptation of the Fyodor Dostoyevsky novel The Idiot. The thriller centers on “a man of pure spirit who thinks he can save the world but is caught between a wildly beautiful and fragile woman, a woman he is falling in love with and a friend who is trying to destroy him.” Variety reports Paul Williams will direct with an eye toward a September shoot in Los Angeles. Donald Kushner (Tron: Legacy) will produce. Intandem Films is currently shopping the package to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival.

In The Idiot, the saintly Prince Myshkin returns to Russia from a Swiss sanatorium and finds himself a stranger in a society obsessed with wealth, power, and sexual conquest. He soon becomes entangled in a love triangle with a notorious kept woman, Nastasya, and a beautiful young girl, Aglaya. Extortion and scandal escalate to murder, as Dostoevsky’s “positively beautiful man” clashes with the emptiness of a society that cannot accommodate his innocence and moral idealism.

Several notable international filmmakers have taken on The Idiot. Akira Kurosawa filmed a sprawling 265-minute adaptation in two parts that was eventually cut down for release. As one of Russia’s preeminent directors, Andrei Tarkovsky likely would have produced the definitive version, but he died before he could start work on it. As far as I can tell, this is the first major English-language attempt to adapt The Idiot.

NBC Renews “Parenthood” For Season 3

Thus far, all the news coming out of NBC’s early upfronts activity is good. On the heels of reports that Chuck will be back for a fifth season, a source tells TVLine that Parenthood and Harry’s Law also have been renewed for the fall.

NBC — which on Wednesday ordered to series Prime Suspect, Smash and the comedies Up All Night and Whitney — also has greenlit another three new shows: The Playboy Club, Grimm and Awake (fka REM).

Playboy Club stars Eddie Cibrian (CSI: Miami), Amber Heard (Zombieland), Jenna Dewan-Tatum (Step Up), David Krumholtz (Numb3rs) Laura Benati (Eli Stone), and is set at the titular infamous destination in 1960s Chicago.

A fantastical drama, Grimm stars David Giuntoli (Privileged) as a detective whose mission is to protect humans living in a world where Grimm’s Fairy Tale characters actually exist. Silas Weir Mitchell (Prison Break), Sasha Roiz (Caprica) and Kate Burton also star.

Awake, which comes to us from Kyle Killen (Lone Star) and throughout the development season has been pegged as an Inception-flavored thriller, stars Jason Isaacs (Brotherhood) as a cop who wakes from an injury to find himself living in two separate realities., Laura Allen (All My Children), Cherry Jones (24), Steve Harris (The Practice) and Michaela McManus (The Vampire Diaries) also star.

“The Tortured” UK Release & Trailer

“The Tortured” is going to be released on DVD in the UK on October 18th and there is a trailer promoting the release!

There is still no word on when the film will be released in the US.

TRAFFIC STAR CHRISTENSEN RECORDS FIRST SONG

TRAFFIC star ERIKA CHRISTENSEN has become the latest actress to embark on a music career.

The 27 year old recently recorded the first song she wrote after a perf ormance of Etta James’ At Last on U.S. TV show Last Call led to interest in her singing skills.

Christensen says, “It’s (song) a little raunchy… It’s very suggestive …. It was inspired by songs of Etta James’ time that are more kind of, l ike, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.”

“Parenthood” Picked Up for a Second Season

NBC is bringing its freshman drama “Parenthood” back for a second season.

The move is not a total surprise. After a somewhat erratic start, “Parenthood” has settled into its Tuesday 10 p.m. slot and is averaging almost 8 million viewers and a 3.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic. A ratings point in that demographic equals 1.3 million viewers.

Over the last several weeks, “Parenthood” has been rivaling CBS’ “The Good Wife” in the 18-49 demographic. The show, which premiered after the Olympics, had to endure a tough start behind the scenes. Originally scheduled for last fall, it was pushed to mid-season because of the loss of original cast member Maura Tierney, who filmed the pilot but then left the show because of an illness. She was replaced by Lauren Graham.

NBC reached back to one of its old measurements of success — an upscale audience — in explaining its decision to bring back “Parenthood.” The network said the show has one of the highest concentrations of homes with incomes of over $100,000 in the adults 18-49 demographic. NBC used to tout having a rich audience back in its heyday but as of late had steered clear in part because so many of its shows, such as “The Biggest Loser” and “Minute to Win It” don’t do as well in high income homes.

It seems unlikely that NBC will move “Parenthood” out of its current home. The network still has to decide if it will bring back “Chuck” next season, as well as “Law & Order.” NBC is working on yet another spin-off of “Law & Order,” this one set in Los Angeles.

“Mercy” Trailer & Synopsis

Shockingly, she is the only major critic who dislikes his book. A cynic by nature, Johnny becomes determined to find the depth that Mercy says he is lacking and, in the process, falls in love. With an all star supporting cast including James Caan and Dylan McDermott MERCY explores the struggle of maintaining a relationship, and the possibility of losing it all.

Mercy will be released to theaters on April 30, 2010.

UK Release Details for “The Tortured”

It looks like The Tortured, produced by Twisted Pictures, will reach the UK before it lands in the States. Play.com reports the film hits DVD on August 30. Jesse Metcalfe, Erika Christensen and Bill Moseley star in this revenge thriller which concerns a husband and wife who capture and torture the man responsible for killing their child.
